THE FORMATION
The Dialogues with the Divine Trees
Photography Exhibition by Michael, Chang Chih-Ming
Photographer Michael Chang explored the potential World Heritage site in Taiwan – the Wonderland of Qilan Forest – and established a dialogue with the forest. He took photographs for the Divine Trees of thousand years of age. These precious images allow us to continue to search for life meanings.
The vitality of life originates from the deep heart; it is our belief, determination, and promise for a lifetime search.

We enhance popularity of ecological tourism in Qilan Forest through the Exhibition to show the friendliness and harmony between human and natures.
The Potential World Heritage Site in Taiwan
There are only seven cypress species left in the world today. These species are distributed in North America, Japan, and Taiwan. The cypress forests in Taiwan belong to the relic species from the Ice Age and they are the rarest kinds of all. The Makauy Ecological Park is the home to the remaining primal giant cypress trees in Taiwan. Cypress trees are fond of humidity and rainfall-abundant mountainous areas. Taiwan’s cypress forests are the only ones that are found in the subtropical region in the World; they grow in medium- and high-elevation mountain regions. Taiwanese Cultural Council regards them as the only world-class biological heritage.
Protect Forests Forever
There are nearly 100 Taiwan red cypresses and Taiwan cypresses in the forest. All the thousand-year-old trees are named after historical ancient sages and saints. When Confucius started to travel around China some 2,500 years ago, a tree of that age today also just started to bud; how did the tree survive through these years under vastly changing climates? How did it stand so firmly on sliding lands? In 2015, there were two thousand-year-old divine trees fell to the ground under grade-17 gusty wind in Beaufort scale; how shall we then preserve the forest resources for the next 2,500 years?
Second Thought, Second Surrounding
Photographer Michael Chang’s THE FORMATION Exhibition contains six themes: Strength, Shape, Hue, Illusion, Passing, and Heart. Human beings are humbled and miniatured under the lofty Divine Trees. The bark textures resemble surreal oil paintings yet formulate conceptual misty Wonderland. The trees’ lifecycle of “forming, growing, rotting, and emptying” corresponds to that of human’s “birth, dwelling, changing, and death.” Every image has its own inner words and story. The formation of the Divine Trees went through hundreds of decades and recorded the toil and fulfillment of each individual life. It resembles a wise man or a philosopher leading us to a new direction in every turn. We hope THE FORMATION Photography Exhibition would serve you a seed, which at some point in the future, will bud out to become a new turn in your life
THE FORMATION Exhibition contains six themes: Strength, Shape, Hue, Illusion, Passing, and Heart. We hope to arouse people’s respect to the nature and inspire both our inner and outer senses to better understand the meaning of life.
Strength
Budding from dirt and soaring to the heavens, the lofty trees stand on the ground for thousand years, upright and unbent. The branches are unbound by space and time but observe the most beautiful only upon transcending their own limit.
The Strength Series:
The photographs show the strength and beauty of the Divine Trees in no regards of spacetime restrictions. Toiled through history and climate, the trees impart a sense of awe, power, strength, breadth, vigor, and tolerance.
Shape
Tree branches are the lines; tree leaves are the dots, and the heaven is the canvas. The formations are all different, but their humble postures are even more beautiful! Situated in severity, shaped in perseverance, the trees are indeed submissive and only cloud knows the fact.
The Shape Series:
Upon discovering the solitary loftiness and its numerous branch constructs, each wink of eyes brings in a new scene. The shapes are formed by Mother Nature, and they interact with the sky, the neighbor, and the environment to make vivid stories.
Hue
Dark Green, Emerald Green, and Gray Green! The colors of these thousand-year paintings surely contain more than just Green. Wind-engraved, sunburned, and rain-soaked trees change their colors in seasons. The roots, gnarled, knotty and intertwined, seal the giants’ epic past.
The Hue Series:
The motley bark glistens in the sunlight and appears to be part of a watercolor in the mist. Trial and tribulations over the millennia gave testimony to the resilience of these Mother Nature’s unique creations.
Illusion
Fictitiousness or Actuality? False or True? Dream or Reality? Wonderland or Real World? Light, Mist, Snow, and Rain are chasing one another in the forest. For ten, hundred, millions of years, they come and go and putter around happily.
The Illusion Series: The forest is filled with cloud all year long; each day there are only few hours of sunlight shining through. The sunrise, the cloud dissipation, the rapid-changing shadows, and the light layering are all hard to come by under the camera. These elements therefore establish many surreal magnificent sceneries.
逝 Passing
Birth must go through hardship, so we realize the uncertainty of the nature. Death is also inevitable, so we understand how to let things go. The sudden moment of death may terminate a life of thousand years of age. The present moment then initiates the next thousand-year era.
The Passing Series: These giant divine trees may be able to dodge through felling but may not be able to avoid sudden gust wind or lightning. With the photographs, we ponder deeply the death of the old and the rebirth of the new.
